Package Consolidation: A Shipping Cost Worksheet for China Orders
Updated 2026-11-04
Package consolidation can make several China purchases easier to ship together. Whether it saves money depends on the actual packed shipment, the carrier’s charging rules and the extra services required. Compare the same goods to the same destination before approving a combined parcel.
This practical worksheet complements our package consolidation guide. It is designed for buyers collecting several supplier orders, including November sale purchases.
Collect measurements before comparing prices
For each incoming parcel, record its actual weight, outer dimensions and contents. Ask which items can travel together on the proposed route. Batteries, liquids, fragile products and oversized items can require different handling or a different service; the answer depends on the actual product and carrier.
Request the proposed combined parcel’s measurements after any agreed repacking. Adding item weights alone cannot predict freight: protective packaging and empty space affect the size of the shipment.
Understand chargeable weight
Some services compare actual weight with dimensional weight and charge using the larger figure, subject to their own rounding and minimums. A calculation sometimes used is length × width × height in centimeters divided by a route-specific divisor. Ask for the divisor and rounding rule in your quotation rather than assuming a universal formula.
Hypothetical example: a 40 × 30 × 30 cm parcel weighs 4 kg. If the quoted service uses a divisor of 5,000, dimensional weight is 7.2 kg. The applicable chargeable weight would be at least 7.2 kg before that service’s rounding rules. A different service may use a different method.
Worked comparison: three separate parcels or one shipment
All figures below are invented USD examples, not live carrier rates or a BuyTCN quotation. Both options contain the same goods. Destination taxes, duties and clearance charges are excluded from both totals and must be assessed separately.
- Separate shipping: parcel A $25 + parcel B $28 + parcel C $32 = $85.
- Combined shipping: international freight $60 + agreed consolidation/repacking $8 + extra protective materials $5 = $73.
- Illustrative difference: $85 − $73 = $12 saved.
Now change only the combined freight to $78 because the final box is bulkier than expected. The combined total becomes $91, which is $6 more than separate shipping. Consolidation is a choice to calculate, not an automatic discount.
Include the costs that a freight headline leaves out
- Domestic delivery from each supplier to the receiving location.
- Storage beyond any confirmed allowance and any requested inspection.
- Repacking labor, packing materials and optional insurance where available.
- Carrier surcharges, remote-area charges and destination clearance costs.
- Applicable taxes or duties, including how combining goods changes their treatment.
If domestic delivery is identical in both options, show it on both sides rather than counting it as a consolidation saving. Likewise, raising the order value can reduce shipping as a percentage of goods value without reducing the freight bill itself.
Price the waiting time as well
A combined shipment may have to wait for the last supplier. If most products are ready but one is delayed, ask for two alternatives: ship everything together later, or send the urgent stock separately. Compare the additional freight with the commercial cost of missing your selling window.
For Christmas wholesale orders, distinguish the supplier’s dispatch date, warehouse receipt, international departure and estimated final delivery. A carrier estimate does not guarantee that inventory will be available for a holiday campaign.
Approve the final plan in writing
Ask your China shopping agent to confirm which parcels are included, what packaging will be removed, how fragile items will be protected, the final measurements and the quoted service. Keep original retail packaging when it is necessary for resale or product identification.
Use our China package forwarding guide for the receiving workflow and QC photo checklist before dispatch. For a comparison based on your goods, send BuyTCN your item links, quantities and destination.
Quotation basis: Prices, discounts, stock, shipping availability and delivery estimates are subject to actual assessment and calculation. The written quotation and agreed order terms govern your purchase.
