Taobao vs. 1688 for Singles Day: Compare the Whole Order

A Singles Day sale price is a starting point, not the complete cost of buying from China. For an overseas buyer comparing a Taobao offer with a 1688 supplier quotation, the useful question is: which option delivers the right specification and quantity at an acceptable total cost?
This worksheet is for comparing specific offers. It does not assume that one marketplace is always cheaper or that every listed seller is a factory.
First, make the products comparable
Send your Taobao agent or 1688 agent the exact links, selected variants and quantities. A photograph alone is insufficient: two similar-looking products may differ in material, dimensions, accessories, packaging or performance. For resale, add your destination market, labeling requirements and any documents you need before ordering.
- Record the model, material, size, color and included accessories.
- Confirm whether the quoted quantity applies per variant or across the entire order.
- Ask whether stock is available now or requires production.
- Separate standard retail packaging from custom packaging or branding.
- Identify inspection requirements and what would count as an unacceptable substitution.
Use one cost sheet for both offers
For each option, request the goods subtotal after eligible discounts, domestic delivery, purchasing service charges, inspection or repacking charges if requested, international freight and an explanation of taxes or import charges included or excluded. Keep the same destination and shipping assumptions for both comparisons.
Ask who can actually redeem the coupon and whether it depends on membership, a minimum spend, a deposit or a particular payment method. Do not subtract a promotional coupon until its eligibility has been confirmed.
A hypothetical comparison: a lower item price can cost more
The following figures are invented for arithmetic only. They are not seller offers, BuyTCN prices or live freight quotations. Assume 20 identical, confirmed-specification units and USD-equivalent figures throughout.
- Offer A: goods $120 + domestic delivery $5 + purchasing and handling $20 + international freight $45 = $190 before destination import charges, or $9.50 per unit.
- Offer B: goods $100 + domestic delivery $12 + purchasing and handling $20 + international freight $65 = $197 before destination import charges, or $9.85 per unit.
Offer B has the lower goods subtotal, but its larger packed volume makes this assumed order more expensive. If either offer includes a different product, service scope or tax treatment, the comparison must be rebuilt. Also compare the cost per acceptable unit: a cheaper order with unusable products is not a saving.
Separate sale shopping from wholesale preparation
A retail promotion can suit a small trial order. A repeat wholesale order needs additional answers about consistent specifications, repeat availability, production lead time and packaging. Neither a marketplace badge nor a low price replaces supplier checks or destination-specific product requirements.
For Black Friday wholesale stock, work backward from the date goods must be available to sell. Buying during November does not establish that overseas delivery will occur before Black Friday.
Check the actual promotion window
Alibaba Group’s October 15, 2026 announcement says Tmall’s 11.11 pre-sales opened October 15 and its main sale began October 20 at 8 p.m. in China. This is a Tmall announcement; it does not establish identical promotion terms for every Taobao or 1688 offer. Check the selected listing and payment conditions.
